If I've learned anything from my summer internship, it's that I need, and want, to take the time to rediscover my hometown. It's like I've never lived here at all. My eyes have been opened to the nightlife on Edgewood in which I plan to participate once I become of age (God grant me patience, it's less than a month now), the niche of Afro-Carib raw food restaurants in West End (that I deem the leaders of the raw food movement in Atlanta), and the largest tract of greenspace in the city, nearing 200 acres (there are deer in the middle of the city!). Good grief, what else have I been missing out on these past twenty years?
I know my neck of the woods pretty well, but that is one, tiny, four-square-mile section of the greater Atlanta area. Greater in more ways than I could have guessed, I am now beginning to find out. What is it like to be a tourist in your own city? So far as I can tell, lots of fun, so why not continue?
A few things on my list:
- Community Grounds coffee shop in South Atlanta
- Buford Highway (international food extravaganza)
- The Wren's Nest and Soul Veg for lunch
- The Hilliard St./Truly Living Well urban farm and farmer's market
- The Beltline tour
OH, and I need to snap a photo of a particular sky-scraper downtown, at night, because someone else brilliantly noticed it resembles the tower with the Eye of Sauron, and that's cool.
